How to Safely Store Your Medicine
Back to articles...
f you are like most people, you probably keep your medicine in the bathroom. You may be surpised to know that this is one of the worst places to keep your medicine. The air within the cabinets tend to be warm and moist, and this can cause the medicine to disintegrate faster than normal. Keeping your medicine in a much cooler place will allow it to last longer, and it will also be out of the reach of children. A capsule or pill which is placed in a warm environment may become less potent.
If the bathroom is the only place where you can store your medications, you will want to make sure it is closed tight. Medicine should never be placed in a different container. If you decide to place the medicine in your kitchen, make sure it is kept away from the stove or any object which releases large amounts of heat. Medications which are not stored correctly could become toxic. If this happens, taking them could be extremely dangerous. To avoid this, there are a number of things which can be done. You should always remove cotton from medicine bottles which have been opened.
If you leave them in the bottle, they could bring in moisture, and this could cause the pills to become toxic. If you haven't taken a drug for a long period of time, always check the expiration date to make sure it hasn't expired. If it has expired, throw it away. Even if the medicine has not expired, don't consume it if it has changed color or it smells different than when you first purchased it. If the medicine is too soft or too hard, this is a sign it may be damaged. When you purchase medicine, it is best to get instructions from your pharmacist on how to store it. |
